We all want to lose weight. Reasons may vary as to why we want that to happen. Some wants to be fit and healthy – for overall well-being reasons. They want to live longer and feel better in all aspects. Others, on the other hand, want to trim down for physical beauty reasons. If you are slim and sexy, you are attractive to others. Well, whatever the reason may be, it is a good thing nonetheless that you want to trim down.
But what is this news about an exercise pill without the need for physical exertion? Does this mean that there is a scientifically engineered pill that is healthy and cannot be detrimental to the health in any way? And that this pill can help you lose weight without having to exercise or resort to a diet regimen?
Well, here is how the story goes…
There was a study back in 2012 which was published in Nature Medicine website. You can also read about a similar study at the NCBI or National Center for Biotechnology Information website. It was performed by Solt LA and et al. The study was titled “Regulation of circadian behaviour and metabolism by synthetic REV-ERB agonists.”
Obese mice were the test subjects in this study and they were injected a compound which boosted the protein called REV-ERB. With an increased REV-ERB level, it was observed that the mice were more active and they were in fact losing weight. The mice were given high fat food and yet, the REV-ERB seemed to normalize their fatty consumption and the cholesterol levels of the mice were regulated.
And that’s not all…
The mice were seen to be expending more oxygen due to the increased REV-ERB protein. There was a five percent difference from the mice that weren’t on the compound. It is safe to say that their metabolism has improved which made them use up more energy and expend fats quicker.
Because of these findings, Scripps Research Institute based in Jupiter, Florida wanted to find out more about this REV-ERB protein – the why’s and how’s of the compound that triggered its amazing function. They engineered mice that were short or unable to produce the REV-ERB protein in their system. It is also visible to the researchers that the mice with low levels of REV-ERB protein were low in endurance, stamina and their oxygen capacity was a measly 60% only.
After that, scientists from Scripps injected the compound that increased the production of REV-ERB. Soon enough, it was observed that the mice had a boost in REV-ERB and not only that, their mitochondria levels also went up. These are positive results.
Then, they also injected the chemical compound on normal mice – mice that weren’t engineered to have the low levels of oxygen capacity and such. It was observed that the normal mice were performing better than the first group. They ran longer and faster.
Thomas Burris from St. Louis University School of Medicine said that the chemical compound is somewhat a copycat to exercising. Once the mice were injected, they performed a lot better. That’s what the study has proved.
Now, Burris also mentioned that one day there could be a pill with this compound as an ingredient. People can use this pill to jumpstart on their road to weight loss since it was very effective with the mice on the study. Would it be as effective on people? And where is this pill now?
Let’s wait for a few years until the human testing is done. For now, you just have to eat right and exercise your butt off. But you know, even if this pill surfaces sometime in the near future, there is no better way to lose weight and keep it off by eating healthy foods such as whole grains, veggies, fruits and some good fat while exercising at least 20 minutes each day.
